A mixed bag of news this week. I will try harder to come up with fewer depressing articles next week.
- The Park Geun-hye saga: “Appeal trial of Samsung’s Lee begins in bribery case,” “Court extends detention of ex-President Park,” “Cheong Wa Dae requests probe into alleged falsification of Sewol reports,” “Park administration changed details about timeline of events for Sewol tragedy,” and “Documents show Park administration sought to crackdown on organized labor”
- “South Korea Certified for Measles Elimination.” Congratulations!
- “Professor probed for remarks on kidnapping women.” What the hell.
- “‘Housing Poverty’ on the rise for young singles in Seoul.” About four out of very ten young single people in Seoul who live on their own live in housing that does not meet minimum residential standards.
- “Teacher gets 6-year jail term for sexually harassing students.” He harassed seven 10- to 11-year-old students over 38 times.
- “[First Diversity Report of SNU] Women Account for Over 40% of the Student Population, But Only 15% of the Faculty.” A little over a third of the school’s departments had fewer than 10% of female professors–and some had absolutely none.
- “The Few, The Quirky: S. Korea’s War Preppers.” A look into South Korea’s prepping community and industries.
- “Fourth ‘comfort women’ statue to be unveiled in US.” It will be in the Museum of Korean American Heritage in Manhattan.
- “37 Percent of University Students Don’t Read Anything Besides Course Material.” College killed my reading, too.
- “Burn Your Sanitary Pads.” An essay on women’s health and safety.
- “Temperature of Love ranks number one in South Korea this week.” I miss the good old days when winning number one put you far above 10%.
- “Ratings Announced For Premieres Of ‘Avengers Social Club’ And ‘Mad Dog’ In Wednesday-Thursday Drama Time Slot.” Seriously, though. Such anemic ratings across the board.
