“Can South Koreans make more babies?” Is it just me, or have there been a lot of articles lately about South Korea’s low birthrate? Regardless, this article comes at it from a new angle: Japan managed to raise its birthrate from 1.26 to 1.46 in a decade and has taken initiatives to sustain this by trying to attract foreign housekeepers to help encourage mothers to go back to work. (Though it would only help people wealthy enough to afford to hire them…) Could something like that work in South Korea?
“How to Escape from the Prison of Violent Masculinity.” In this post, the author (asexual, assigned male at birth but identifies as genderqueer) discusses the performance of masculinity and its close link sexual aggression in South Korea and how it has been used against them. Please note, the article also mentions rape and sexual assault.
“Weekend drama Blow Breeze swaps out actress midway.” A ligament injury and subsequent surgery and mandated rest has forced actress Oh Ji-eun to end her appearance on Blow Breeze. As of Tuesday, actress Im Soo-hyang was in negotiations to take over the part. It seems like so many people have gotten hurt and/or sick this year–I hope this is the last major incident this year. 🙁
