Kpop Friday: Sistar’s “Lonely”

I know a lot of people in my corner of the internet have been sad ever since the news broke that Sistar would be disbanding, and I was, too. “I Swear” is one of my favorite kpop songs, and I’m a little sad we won’t be getting any more like it from this talented quartet. That said, “Lonely” is a lovely parting gift to Sistar’s fans. It isn’t often that a group gets a goodbye song and a wrap-up that feels amicable. While “Lonely” isn’t a summer anthem song like the group was famous for, the song and MV are a bittersweet tribute to endings.

The lyrics are straightforward—the narrator has begun to feel lonely in a relationship that is on the rocks:

Breaking up is the only option left
You’re preparing our end, too
We can’t go back in time
That’s what hurts
(x)

It’s pretty standard fare as far as these types of songs go, but what really elevates “Lonely” is the chorus. I love the way it builds into something that almost sounds like they’re preparing to break free. It’s not quite upbeat, not exactly heart-wrenching angst, but something that’s akin to being this close to throwing in the metaphorical towel.

The music video goes back and forth between engaging with the angst in the lyrics and just acknowledging that this is an actual farewell. One of the things that I loved about “I Swear” was that it looked like the members were having fun, and that’s here, too, which is a lovely contrast to the shots that feel like everyone is saying goodbye.

“Lonely” is a wonderful sendoff to a strong group, and if you haven’t given it a listen already, you should:

Kpop Friday: Sistar’s “I Swear”

It has been in the 90s (32 C) all week, so I suppose I ought to concede that summer is, indeed, here. But that’s all right because with summer, come summer songs, including one of my new favorites: Sistar’s “I Swear.” This one actually makes me nostalgic for the weekend after my high school graduation, when my three high school BFFs and I went to the coast all on our own with the graduation money we’d rounded up and enjoyed our first ever extended period without adult supervision. It was like four days. Overnight. We drove ourselves two hours to get there.

I Swear

See, I was going to school out of state and another of us was headed out to a school an hour or so away from the tiny towns we’d spent practically our whole lives in, so we decided we needed an adventure. We did silly things like wake up around dawn to go crabbing (without a license, oops), played complicated card games with eight(?) different decks all at once, and held hands during the incoming tide and refused to retreat until the shortest of us was soaked to the waist. We even bought a birthday cake to celebrate our birthdays for the next year since my impending departure meant we couldn’t celebrate three out of our four days all together.

I Swear

Instead of going to our ten-year reunion, I flew back to my hometown so the four of us could get together for another beach retreat. No early morning crabbing this time around (all-you-can-eat buffet at a casino instead, mmmmm), but lots of hours on the beach taking photographs and catching up on our lives.

Both trips are honestly some of my best memories–and that’s what this MV makes me think of, no matter what the lyrics actually say. These ladies just look like they’re having so much fun on their getaway that I can’t even care about how male-gazey it is. This MV never fails to make me smile.
