Summary: High school student Lee Shi-kyung has earned his antisocial and computer nerd reputation. He and his younger sister, hot-tempered cosplay nerd Lee Shi-young, end up being sent to a really weird high school. There they meet Park Ga-ram, a top student who wants to become a doctor, and Kim Bom, a mysterious and shy girl. Shi-kyung will have to force himself out of his comfort zone in order to survive and thrive in this new place.

Girls’ Generation 1979 (1/8)

Summary: Daegu, 1979. High school student Lee Jung-hee has a one-sided crush on fellow student Son Jin, who works part-time at a pharmacy. Her life gets more complicated when a transfer student arrives at school. Park Hye-joo is from Seoul, and she instantly catches the attention of a lot of people, including Son Jin. As the school year goes by, Jung-hee and Hye-joo will need to figure out their budding friendship and what they both want out of life.

This coming-of-age drama is based on a 2009 novel Lingerie Girls’ Generation (란제리 소녀시대) by Kim Yong-hee.

Summary: High school student and webtoon artist Ra Eun-ho is determined to keep her sixth-place class ranking in order to get into the same college as a boy she has a crush on. But her academic future gets thrown into uncertainty when school officials believe she is a delinquent student. Meanwhile, the wealthy and rebellious Hyun Tae-woon gets transferred to Eun-ho’s school after being kicked out of his U.S. high school and immediately begins causing problems. Song Dae-hwi is a handsome student who gets good grades,. stands up for the weak, and often butt heas with Hong Nam-joo, another student. Eun-ho and the others will try to figure out how to survive a school system that puts their academic rankings above all other aspects of their lives.

Solomon’s Perjury (1/12)

Summary: Bae Joon-young stumbles across the body of his friend Lee So-woo on Christmas morning, and the police quickly rule it a suicide. But on the day of the funeral, fellow student Go Seo-yeon receives an anonymous note claiming that So-woo was actually murdered. When the school administrators and police refuse to look into So-woo’s death any further, Seo-yeon and her classmates decide to take matters into their own hands,. Their investigation threatens to unearth information that others would prefer be kept secret. Solomon’s Perjury is a remake of two 2015 Japanese films, which were in turn based on the novel Solomon’s Perjury by Miyuki Miyabe.

One of the first questions I ask when someone wants me to rec them a kdrama is what genre they’re in the mood for. So here are my 3-5 favorites by genre, plus my top 10 overall favorites.
