Welcome to the second half of the year! Now I’m feeling inadequate about all the things i have yet to accomplish with fifty percent of 2017 gone. Ooops.
- “Koreans’ average marriage age rises.” Men are up to 36 and women are at 33.
- “Korean women’s lives in numbers.” From professions percentages to children to victim crime stats.
- “1 in 9 female migrant workers subject to sexual abuse.” And other depressing stats.
- “First-ever protest encircles the US embassy in Seoul.” Approximately 3,000 protesters showed up to demonstrate against THAAD.
- “Gimjae Spy Family Case: Defendants Acquitted in a Retrial 34 Years Later.” A bittersweet outcome–all of the men are dead.
- “Minimum wage talks collapse.” They missed a self-imposed deadline, but talks will continue.
- “False ‘scoops’ hurting hallyu star Song Hye-kyo and Song Joong-ki.” There have been several shoddier-than-normal tabloid journalism incidents lately.
- “Education Blues Pt. 1: South Korea Cracks Down on Elite Schools.” This was one of President Moon’s campaign promises.
- “Youths who live independently face poverty and isolation.” An essay discussing the realities of young adults (and some teenagers) who live alone, without familial support.
- “Study Links Male Breadwinner Model to South Korea’s Low Birth Rate.” “Most South Korean households fell under the category of the male-breadwinner model in which family benefits, childcare leave and childcare service were poorly provided.”
- “Men Still Earn Vastly More Than Women.” The gap between men and women’s salaries in Korea is the largest in the OECD nations.
- “South Korea to Enforce Content Quota on TV for the Disabled.” The bill has been proposed but not passed.
- “Allegations of Misogyny and Homophobia Rock Dongguk University.” A women’s rights student group distributed posters featuring the hateful things professors said during lectures/classes.
- “Korean politics of child citizenship.” A discussion of citizenship issues. (Kang Kyung-wha has since been appointed.)
- “Culture ministry considering measures to ban conglomerates’ screen monopoly.” Good luck.
- “‘Circle’ PD Comments On A Possible Second Season For The Drama.” I doubt we’ll ever get one, but I’d be happy if we did.
- “Jeon Ji Hyun is pregnant with second child.” Congratulations!
- “A guide to eating vegetarian In South Korea.” In case you need it. (Though the constant “blech” gets annoying fast.)
- “Season 2 Of ‘Bad Guys’ Confirms Main Cast.” I’m kind of sad about the lack of the old cast, but also a little optimistic? IDK.
- “Goodbye, Im Si Wan!” Have a safe enlistment.
- “Yoo Ah In receives military service exemption.” A detailing of all his medical conditions that were behind his exemption.
